That evening Declan left Mile End early; nothing new had occurred in the case, and Declan had spent the afternoon phoning military experts, trying to learn how to modify a starter pistol into a regular weapon. It didn’t seem to be that difficult, a lot of it involved the barrel of the gun being changed, as started pistols had solid barrels. But every expert he spoke to said one thing; starter pistols were inferior to guns. They were more likely to explode in your face than fire. And that meant that if you were to use one, you needed to be at a point of having no other options.

Declan also left early as he had a more important meeting; one he couldn’t miss.

‘Dad!’ Jessica Walsh’s face brightened as she opened the front door. ‘Mum! Dad’s here!’

‘I know,’ Elizabeth Walsh appeared at the doorway, moving Jessica back into the house so that Declan could get in. ‘He’s babysitting you while I’m at book club.’

She wore a tweed jacket over a white shirt, blue jeans completing the ensemble. Her long blonde hair was pulled into a pony tail, but not too tight.

‘You look like you’re off on a date,’ Declan said.

‘I wish,’ Elizabeth replied. ‘But for some reason all the men run away when they hear my ex is a copper.’

She picked up a paperback book from the side table, walking out of the front door as Declan entered. ‘Your dinner’s in the oven, another twenty five minutes,’ she said as she walked to the car. ‘Don’t do anything I wouldn’t do.’

Declan smiled at this before closing the front door on his ex-wife. Alone in the hallway of a house he once lived in, his expression changed to a more melancholy one. He knew that Elizabeth was long gone now; there was no chance of any reconciliation in that manner. But he was fine with that. He’d made the choice of choosing the police over her, and that had backfired spectacularly. Even more so, now he was one step away from being fired.

Jessica was already in the living room, sitting on the sofa and working on her laptop. She had cut her hair short and dyed it blue; it actually suited her. Declan assumed the school wasn’t happy about it. Fifteen year olds didn’t usually make such strong style statements.

‘Saw you on the news,’ Jessica said. ‘You okay?’

‘I am, kiddo,’ Declan sat down on the sofa beside her. ‘In fact, I’m already on another case.’

‘Yeah? Is this one more exciting than dogs?’

‘Murder,’ Declan said. ‘Student at Queen Mary last night.’

‘Cool,’ Jessica said with no hint of irony. She was genuinely interested; if he couldn’t find a way to stop her, Declan knew that Jessica was on her way to be the third generation of ‘Walsh copper’.

‘So what do you have so far?’ she asked. Declan shuffled around on the sofa to be able to face his daughter. Quickly and without embellishing anything, he explained what he knew; that Bernard had been
